Because one of my favorite things to do is babble on about how good a book is, so here is a blog full of just that.
These are books you oughta read if you get the chance.
Gone With The Wind: The story of a Southern Belle and the changes that she goes through during the harsh Civil War. A book told from the perspective of The Confederacy. I was skeptical about this. My mom and gram had both told me it was one of their favorites, but I was afraid it would be terribly boring. It was just the opposite. it's so rich with information. Something was happening on each page, there was never a dull moment. No book has ever before taken me on the emotional rollercoaster that gone With the Wind did. first of all you don't know how you feel about Scarlett O'Hara. is she awesome? Is she an evil bitch? Do I love her? Do I hate her? It is really all of the above. Right when you think that things are gonna start going well for scarlett again another blow happens. it does a fantastic job of building you up and taking you right back down. When at the last 100 pages I said "I'm not really worried, i can't imagine anythings gonna happen that's gonna get me more than the rest of this book" I was wrong. Not only did it get me once harder, it got me TWICE. It's a fantastic read, and then best 1000+ pages you ever invested your time in.
The Last Unicorn: I know, it sounds silly. especially after some great American classic like gone With the Wind, but trust me on this one. It's one of the most beautifully written stories I've ever read. The instant you start reading it you are right there with the Unicorn on her journey. Unicorns sound like a sissy topic, but trust me, any fantasy lover will love the Last Unicorn. It's got all the goods. A lonely unicorn on her journey to find out where the rest of her kind are. She ends up traveling with a foolish magician named Schmendrick and a lady named Molly Grue. The minute it's over you are going to wanna turn back to page one and start over. Seriously.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: You've probably seen the movie, and if you ask me its a good thing. The book is *literally* crazy. It's told from the point of view of Chief Bromden, who is off his rocker. The way Chief describes some of the crazy things in his head makes it seem like it's just the way the world works. they turn on fog machines, they are robots, there is a huge machine below the hospital, etc etc. Anyways it might be a bit hard to follow if you hadn't seen the movie to help you have a visual. Either Way, you really oughta give it a shot (fffffffuck da wife!)
The Incarnations Of Immortality Series: Yes, the series. (the original 5 of the series anyway. the stuff he added on later isn't as great.) It takes place in the not - so -distant- future when magic and technology work side by side. people fly around on magic carpets for goodness sake! All of the books are really funny and make an enjoyable read.
- Book One: On A Pale Horse : The story of your average down on his luck fellow who ends up having to assume the role of the Incarnation of Death. The book seriously gave me a whole new perspective on death and dying. Zane is the best reaper anyone could hope for. Not only does he have to take people's lives and learn to deal with that, he also has to stop satan from taking the woman he loves. Yes. Satan.
- Book Two: Bearing An Hourglass: Not the best one in the series, but necessary to it none the less. It's really a mind bender, which all things having to do with Time are. this is about a dude who goes through some misfortune and ends up getting to be the Incarnation of Time. Time live backwards from everything else, which is enough to stir up confusion anyway. Satan also flings him into distant galaxies, and there's more mindbending of the logic of time there. It's all pretty weird, but all in all it's a good read.
- Book Three: With A Tangled Skein : A really good one, but the longest in the series. The story of an Irish girl named Niobe who (through a series of misfortune, see the pattern here?) becomes one of the Incarnations of Fate. There are three, and they all have to take turns occupying one body. This is where the connections in the series start to make sense and things start coming together, just in time to get you ready for..
-Book Four: Wielding A Red Sword: I really didn't think I would like this one. its about a stuttering prince (who sings what he says in order to not stutter) who runs off with the circus and gets his nickname, Mym. blah blah blah he ends up becoming the Incarnation of War. it's actually pretty funny. The other incarnations he rides with (slaughter, famine, pestilence etcetc,..i forget the other if there is one. ) are hysterical during battle. (or i thought so anyway) and just...read it.
-Book Five: Being A Green Mother: The last of the original series, about a girl who becomes Mother Nature. There isn't a whole lot I can say about this book without giving a whole bunch of stuff away, but its necessary and if you've read the other four i'd hope that by the time you got to this point you wouldn't need my recommendation xD
To Kill A Mockingbird: I found this one to be a quick read, and a good way to escape back to childhood for a while. the playing, the stories you tell with your friends and the way you see the world. it's all there, and its a nice getaway for a while. All the childish mystery and wonderment makes this book absolutely charming, and a good one to just pass the time.
and I am currently reading Lonesome Dove and I can already tell you that once i'm finished it'll be on this list.
more to come, i'm tired of writing now.
